Korra

So, I've spent the last two days arguing about this with my brother... I'm going to give the show the rest of the season. Maybe my complaints will be addressed. I think Korra is salvagable as a character... I think Mako and Bolin are not. But, there are five people in the world whose opinions are, as far as I'm concerned gospel (even when we do occasionally disagree), and my brother is one of them.

Okay, Korra, you have my patience. Thank my brother.

  1. I think Bolin can be salvaged into something worthwhile with the right execution, since the character hasn't done anything one way or another yet. But I'm not necessarily holding my breath on his "development" being worthwhile.

But Mako? Short of him becoming a villain who would have ties to 2 (or even 3 if you count Asami) of the main characters. I can't think of a single redeeming aspect he could possibly have as a a character. He's damaged goods.

  2. Hey Greg, please don't ignore the elephant in the room here? On my dashboard I saw you posted an entry titled "Sigh" that was complaining about your previous Korra entry getting more comments than was needed, but it cuts off at "only received six...", then when I click the link to see more, the entry is gone. What gives? I missed the entry, so did it get controversy or something? Did you rip into the show even more? What gives?

For what it's worth, I couldn't comment on entries like your "Much Ado About Nothing" one because I've yet to see that movie. I wish I could, but I haven't. Sorry.

    1. I don't care what it says on your dash. That entry was deleted. I felt like deleting it. You are not entitled to hear me address anything I don't want to.

    2. Didn't say I was. I was just curious. Sheesh.

  3. Glad to see you'll be sticking around like I will. Plus as a bonus, just in case you forgot, Joss Whedon's SHIELD spinoff is airing this week. Two for the price of one, how cool is that?

And concerning Bolin, let me elaborate. The thing that gets to me is that the writers are trying to make him the new Sokka. Something they should never done is try to imitate what was already done. They could make him the comic relief but they shouldn't try too hard to make him funny.

Korra, I still have no issues; I really don't get the complaints. She's a teenager with godlike powers, pressure is going to be put on her and power likely got to her head.

    1. As far as Bolin goes, if Eska's crap treatment towards him results in him standing up for himself and being assertive overall, then I'd say it's a start.

A post was made regarding Korra: http://ramblingsofpicturebox.blogspot.com/2013/09/korra-flawed-protaganist-or-obnoxious.html

I'll just repeat here what I posted in that blog. "On the one hand, the show does acknowledge that she has flaws (compared to Mako), on the other hand it will insist that she's grown into a better more mature person despite being preceded by her backsliding (such as insisting that she grew past thinking that she's worthless without her bending when it was pretty clear she was going to jump & would have if Aang didn't show up)."

But adding to that, there's the matter of how Lin warmed up to her. Now people insist that Lin despite the bitterness of she had with Tenzin wasn't venting towards Korra.

And I'd believe that, if she didn't almost immediately get along with Korra after patching things up with Tenzin.

It just seems to me that Lin's criticism of her recklessness would lead her into actually showing restraint when necessary and thus earning the her respect.
